NHS Professionals Update: A Game-Changing Salesforce Migration - Aaron Garcia
We caught up with Aaron Garcia to get an update on all the happenings with his current project. We love reading this sort of content and want to hear from more of you about what is going on in the day to day. Please get in touch if you want to share anything, in the meantime find out what Aaron’s been up to…
SITUATIONAL REPORT
From time to time, we all need to take stock of where we are, especially when you're part of a ground-breaking project like the Salesforce Migration for NHS Professionals (NHSP).
The Landscape
NHSP manages 'the bank'—a dynamic pool of around 120,000 active workers, with an influx of over 10,000 new nursing applicants each month. These figures give you a taste of the scale we're working at. We're not just dealing with numbers, though; we're orchestrating a complex ecosystem that includes invoicing, incident management, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and Workforce Management Systems (WFM).
The Big Picture
In a nutshell, this Salesforce migration aims to rejuvenate NHSP's core systems for talent acquisition and workforce allocation. The monumental challenges are primarily two-fold: Scale and Compliance.
The Mechanics
As we shift gears, we're simultaneously replacing multiple engines that run the NHSP machine. These include not just the ATS and WFM but also the invoicing and incident management systems.
The Cultural Dimension
Don't underestimate the cultural challenge; most of our NHSP workers are clinicians, focused entirely on patient care. For them, computers are a means to an end, not the end itself. We're gearing up for intensive training to ensure a seamless transition which includes an Azure Active Directory Migration for the workers.
Aaron's Role
As the application Solution Architect, my remit covers the main ATS and WFM components. We've been engaged in a build based on multiple requirements-gathering phases so far running for around 18 months, these have collated thousands of specific FR/NFRs. We have pivoted into the build ‘configuration’ stage, and the anticipation is palpable as we gear up for testing towards go-live.
The Context
Winter isn't just coming; it's very much in our minds as it puts extra strain on an already stretched NHS system. The engineering going into this migration lie in balancing speed with caution. We can't afford downtime; the NHS doesn't do 'pauses’, it runs 24hrs a day every day.
The Team
I am privileged to be part of the Platform-Smart's team, boasting expertise in data, integrations, and testing. While I can't spill the beans on the financial aspects, it's a landmark project that promises to make NHSP more agile, offering richer choice for workers, and a system more attuned to the needs of both its clients and workforce.
The Tech Constraint
Salesforce is powerful but not built for heavy computational tasks, especially considering the nuanced worker-to-shift allocation problem we have at hand. Every API call counts, and architectural decisions must be made keeping this delicate balance in mind.
The Endgame
The ultimate goal is to find the right worker for the ideal shift, at the most cost-effective rate, while complying with a labyrinth of legal and procedural requirements. In so doing, we're not just changing systems; we're transforming how NHSP operates, making it faster, smarter, and more human-centric.
