Wireless Blueprint Services
Use Case
SOLUTION: Consulting
Sector: Transport & LOGISTICS
Creating a global blueprint for wireless technology implementation.
The Client
A global freight operator at its distribution hub, the customer is one of the world’s largest transportation and logistics services providers. With over 100,000 customers in 130 countries, it processes more than 3 billion transactions through its online logistics platform.
The Challenge
Wireless technologies have become pivotal to the operations of class-leading logistics hubs and terminals. With the ever-expanding varieties of underlying technologies available, the customer recognised the pressing need to standardize its approach to deploying wireless services in order to maintain the effectiveness of its world-class logistics terminal operations.
The customer’s dependency on wireless in its terminals had increased with automation, asset digitization and many more evolving use cases, and it expected this trend to continue. It had no consistent approach to deploying wireless, with most implementations being technology, country and regionally standalone. This has resulted in a variety of solutions being deployed globally with limited visibility of the service being provided to the business, uptime, global monitoring and alerting, for example.
Platform Smart’s Solution Overview
Platform Smart was asked to identify and develop the key service and technology blueprints required to underpin the customer’s future wireless implementation strategy.
By deploying its Consulting service Platform Smart mobilized specialists in wireless technologies to undertake an in-depth review specific. The review investigated terminals across all regions, with many interviews with terminal management, regional management and technical staff. The review discovered which past, in-flight and potentially new wireless solution projects had been progressed. Historically, there had been varying levels of autonomy at the terminal and regional level. The review was to discover, globally, what could be leveraged, built upon and re-used to give confidence to the whole operation that the business can deploy new technologies while commanding a standardized, forward-looking, process improvement-led service operation.
The Outcome
The project resulted in the development of the Global Wireless Blueprint that provides standardisation of any wireless solution implemented. It does this by bringing a set of common, fit-for-purpose, transparent guidelines for technology choice, implementation approach and service management.
The Global Wireless Blueprint will allow the customer to push forward with its strategic vision of bringing common wireless services under the management of Group IT. It will also provide a framework to easily identify wireless business requirements and their mapping to a known set of service capabilities either at the group level or locally within the terminals.
